Way Station by Clifford D. Simak

I have been wanting to read this book for quite a long time. My husband has read it several times and constantly said that he loved the story. But he read and reread this book in Russian, while I wanted to read it in the original language – English, and that made the task a little more difficult (because, as you know, I live in Russia). :)

Finally, I found the English version, and I wasn’t disappointed. This book turned out to be a good solid science fiction, very well written and thoughtful. I liked the main character, Enoch Wallace; I felt a strong connection with him. You know, it is a great talent to write in such a way that the reader could tell that the characters are real characters, and Clifford D. Simak definitely had this talent.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves science fiction.

Here are some words from the book that I found interesting and that I would like to share with all of you. I hope you enjoy them.

grub = (разг) жрачка, харчи (He lives rather simply, to judge from the grub he buys.)
moonshine = самогон (I helped them with their moonshine…)
goldenrods = золотарник (The goldenrods were blooming now…)
frills = ужимки, навороты, прибамбасы (Don’t add any frills. Just do what I tell you.)
letterhead = фирменный бланк для письма, на котором напечатаны название и адрес фирмы (I do not use the journal’s letterhead because this letter is personal and unofficial…)

Replay by Ken Grimwood

Just finished reading Replay by Ken Grimwood. Interesting idea, and the writing wasn’t bad but the characters were… (Sorry, I can’t find the right word here.) The characters were well developed and they were good decent people, but for some reason I just didn’t care much for them. Strange, isn’t it? :scratch:

As usual, in the book I found some words and phrases that were interesting to me as a Russian and that I would like to share. I hope you enjoy them.

off kilter = странный, в смятении, в беспорядке; возбужденный (I’ve been feeling a little off kilter.)
OD’d = overdosed = передоз, перебор (Enough already; I’ve OD’d on James Bond.)
cash in one’s chips = (досл.) обменять фишки на наличные в конце игры, рассчитаться, продать чью-то долю или акции (… I’m cashing in my chips, old partner. Walking away from the table.)
Gelusil = Гелусил = aнтацидный препарат (…two foil-wrapped tablets of Gelusil.)
far out = отлично, (я бы даже сказала) отпадно (I probably said ‘far out’ a lot.)
wet behind the ears = молоко на губах не обсохло; новичок, зеленый, неопытный (I thought you were some wet-behind-the-ears kid…)
bed-tangles = если я правильно понимаю, это спутанные (взлохмаченные) волосы после сна (She had finished dressing and was brushing the bed-tangles from her fine, straight hair.)

Интересные слова/выражения:

Wendy’s = Wendy’s fast food restaurant = американская сеть ресторанов быстрого питания (к стыду своему, не знала);
unscathed = невредимый (Faye is fine, unscathed);
no sweat off my back = (здесь) не волнует (No sweat off my back if he lives or dies);
RV = recreational vehicle = жилой автофургон, дом на колесах (The RV is big, it requires a lot more stops to refuel);
gizmo = штуковина, гаджет, девайс, хренотень; устройство неизвестного названия (… played games without relying on gadgets or gizmos);
old wives’ tales = “бабушкины сказки”. Насколько я поняла, в книге имелись виду старые поверья, народные приметы, часто касающиеся здоровья, но основанные на неподтвержденных данных. (He didn’t have the resources to do blood work, so he had to rely on knowledge, old fashioned wives tale signs, deduction and reasoning.)

Давно меня так не бесила главная героиня. Все эти самокопания и алкоголь, алкоголь, алкоголь…
Привычного мира, который ты знала, больше нет, в живых остались единицы, а ты бухаешь гектолитрами и желаешь остаться одна? Серьезно?

Ну (разводящий руками смайлик). Зато нашла несколько интересных слов и выражений:

MRE = Meal, Ready-to-Eat = сухой паек;
tide over = поддержать, помочь продержаться (… are you sure I can’t give you an MRE or box of cereal to tide you over?)
buzz cut = короткая стрижка (под машинку). В книге один из выживших предлагает главной героини подумать над тем, чтобы укоротить волосы. Он говорит: «I mean buzz it.»

The Last Cuentista by Donna Barba Higuera

Interesting story that gives you something to think about. I also liked a soft mixture of English and Spanish in the book. I’m really happy that I can read and understand both of these great languages.

Some interesting words and phrases I found in the book and I’d like to share them here:

tall tale = небылица, небыль, выдумка (… she says, referring to one of her tall tales);
squabbling = пререкаться, ссориться из-за пустяков (… we need to stop squabbling, be kind, and work hard);
Jesus lizard = common basilisk = шлемоносный или обыкновенный василиск (Len sprints up the shuttle’s ramp like a Jesus lizard across a pond);
turn a cold shoulder (to sb) = оказать холодный прием, демонстративно проигнорировать (Voxy huffs annoyedly at the man and turns a cold shoulder);
get cold feet = сдрейфить, оробеть, струсить в последнюю минуту (… if Voxy gets cold feet and tells Nyla I took one of the relics);
crisscross applesauce = cross-legged = сидеть скрестив ноги, по-турецки (I take a few steps back and plop down crisscross applesauce…).

The Pretender – Rebirth. Притворщик, да не тот :)

Прочитала первую часть «Притворщика» на английском – Rebirth by Steven Long Mitchell, Craig W. Van Sickle. Книга на любителя. Сначала вроде бы очень понравилась, потом – не очень…

Все-таки, так и не смогла связать главного героя книги с Джаредом из сериала «Притворщик», которого играл Майкл Т. Уайсс (Michael T. Weiss). Для меня именно тот, киношный – и есть настоящий Джаред. :)

Зато нашла одно очень интересное словосочетание: «a yellow smile». Именно с такой улыбкой на губах один нехороший человек стирал со стены «художества» похищенного им мальчика.

“While Adidas Man admired the kid’s guile, he grabbed the water bottle from Luke’s breakfast tray and washed away the drawings of Kaj and himself with a yellow smile on his face.”

Скорее всего, здесь речь идет об издевательской, злой (желчной?) улыбке. Возможно, с неким оттенком горечи и неопределенности из-за… (Молчу, молчу! Спойлерить не буду.)

Моя преподавательница английского, которая родилась и всю жизнь живет в США, говорит, что о таком словосочетании никогда не слышала. Она считает, что автор просто хотел подчеркнуть момент, выразиться более поэтически, что ли. Возможно и так.

В общем, не зря всегда говорю, что почти каждая книга может нас научить чему-нибудь новому. И, да, надо пересмотреть сериал!

When the Ashes Fall

Прочитала When the Ashes Fall by Jacqueline Druga. Сначала было очень интересно, но потом интерес начал угасать и дочитывала до конца уже без особого энтузиазма. Хорошая книга, но я ожидала бОльшего.

Выписала только две фразы:
T-bone = broadside (collision) = врезаться в бок автомобиля;
jack = самая малость, чуточка (You know jack…).

Интересно, но ожидала бОльшего

Hell’s Hollow by Summer Stone (Publication Date: Mar 14, 2013. Print Length: 182 pages).

Не понравилась концовка, скучновато немного, но в целом для дебюта – очень даже хорошо.
Интересные слова и выражения:

Bark up the wrong tree = обратиться не по адресу, ошибиться, напасть на ложный след (You may be barking up the wrong tree asking me this stuff);
bide one’s time = ждать благоприятного, подходящего момента, случая (I was dying to ask him more about being locked up, about what he’d meant when he’d said “murderer”, but I needed to bide my time);
blow off = отшить (Suddenly he seemed sad and serious. I worried that it meant he wasn’t interested in being friends with a freak like me – that he was struggling to find some polite way of blowing me off);
circa = c. = ca. = приблизительно (Just then, the circa – 1970 transistor radio on the metal desk came on by itself blaring oldies. The Hollow was up to its tricks);
croak = (разг.) умереть (The chipmunk died suddenly, like it was super strong and healthy for a minute, like crazy good, and then it had a heart attack or something and croaked);
lay claim to = предъявлять права на что-либо (A few of the local men tried to sneak in and lay claim to this land);
legal pad = блокнот с отрывными страницами из желтой линованной бумаги, без обложки, очень популярный в США (She scribbled notes on a legal pad);
let down = разочаровывать, подводить (I trusted you. How could you let me down like this?);
stall = глохнуть – о двигателе (I knew he’d gotten stuck here when his car had stalled out on his way from West Virginia to San Francisco);
spring= побег, освобождение из тюрьмы или плена. Возможно, от слова «spring» – открывать с помощью пружины, отомкнуть (You figure out how to block those radio signals, then come back and spring us);
wound-up = взвинченный, заведенный (I paced around my small room, too wound up to be still).

Моя жизнь по соседству (Хантли Фицпатрик) на английском – понравилась

Дочитала: My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick (Publication Date: Jun 14, 2012. Print Length: 400 pages).
Только три слова: очень хорошая книжка. И звучит в душе мелодия:

Be poles apart = быть диаметрально противоположным (Everything about the two women profiled in the driveway is poles apart);
burn the midnight oil = работатьпоночамилизасиживатьсязаработойдопоздна (I trace the dark bluish shadow under his eye with a slow finger. “Are you burning the midnight oil?”);
due respect = должное, заслуженное уважение (Everything you say makes sense, sir. I guess it’s logical. But with all due respect, you’re out of your fucking mind);
DUI = driving under the influence = управление автомобилем в нетрезвом состоянии или под воздействием наркотических веществ (He has two DUIs);
EMT = emergency medical technician = фельдшер скорой помощи, медицинский работник, оказывающий первую помощь пострадавшему на месте происшествия (He was in a puddle when the EMTs got there);
for keeps = навсегда, окончательно, насовсем (“No creo que se pueda volver y recuperar su trabajo”, Felipe shaps, moved to his native Spanish. “you go out now, and you go out for keeps”);
hush money = взятка, плата за молчание (Mr. Garrett doesn’t want charity – or hush money);
ICU = intensive care unit = отделение интенсивной терапии (The ICU is on the fourth floor and we need passes to get up there);
pay phone = телефон-автомат (He called 911 from a pay phone nearby);
put the moves on someone = что-то типа «подкатывать», пытаться соблазнить (Stop putting the moves on my sister in our kitchen, Tim!);
quote, unquote = буквально, так называемый (“I want to go to college. I want to be… good enough”. He pauses. “For you. Not that guy from the quote-unquote wrong side of the tracks, Samantha”);

Прочитала половину: My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick (Publication Date: Jun 14, 2012). Вроде ничего особенного, а оторваться невозможно! Отличная книжка и читается легко.

Beat it! = прочь!, вон! (George! Beat it!);
come to terms (with smth.) = примириться, привыкнуть к чему-либо (It only took Clay a little while to come to terms with the fact that I had teenaged daughters);
CVS = CVS Pharmacy = распространенная в США сеть магазинов аптечных товаров + товаров повседневного спроса (We go to CVS later that night);
every trick in the book = все (возможные) средства (Tracy pulled every bad-teenager trick in the book. She played with drugs and drinking, she shoplifted, she slept with too many boys);
hangnail = заусенец (Tim’s eyes are cast down as he tears at a hangnail on his thumb);
ministering angel = (обычно о сестре милосердия) добрый ангел (What, you don’t see my big sister as a ministering angel? I’m shocked!);
no sweat = никаких проблем, не волнуйся (“Thanks,” I tell Alice. She fixes me with a stare “No sweat.”);
ole = (ам. разг.) old (S’up with ole Jase Garrett and you?);
Q-tips = «кью-типс» – товарный знак пластиковых ватных палочек с ватой на обеих концах (I bought Q-tips, and almost nothing else);

windbreaker = windcheater = ветровка с вязанными манжетами и воротником (In some of the posters mom’s wearing a yellow Windbreake.
