Позади еще одна книга о похождениях знаменитой шестерки из Розуэлла. Ой, уже семерки – про Адама-то я запамятовала. :)
Выписанных слов мало, но некоторые из них очень интересные:

1) Dixie = Dixieland = The Confederacy = (ам. разг.) «Юг» – т.е. южные штаты Америки, которые были присоединены к США после войны Севера и Юга (I’m talking to you, young lady, with your hair the colour of Dixie sunshine…);
2) no biggie = (AmSlang) не о чем волноваться, совсем не трудно, ничего особенного. (Предполагаю, что это сокращение от: «It’s not a big deal»);
3) on cue = at the right time (On cue, they opened their eyes…);
4) snowball’s chance in hell = snowball’s chance in Hades = никаких шансов, никакой надежды. И это правильно – ну какая может быть надежда у снежного шарика в Аду… (Neither Maria or Cameron had a snowball’s chance in Hades against Isabel);
5) up to speed = (разг.) в курсе дела, в курсе последних событий (She got us up to speed.);
6) varsity = university = (разг. сокр.) университетский;
7) wing it = (разг.) делать что-либо без предварительной подготовки, экспромтом (She’d just have to wing it).

А еще я нашла смешной ляп: «He felt sweat breaking out on his forehead and dripping down his back…». Не правда ли, прелестно!

English Pronunciation in Use (Elementary)

Закончила курс English Pronunciation in Use (Elementary) by Jonathan Marks. Уфф, наконец-то!
Ничего себе «Элементари», между прочим! Сначала вроде бы еще ничего, но ближе к концу учебника – так вообще жесть начинается! Если хочешь более-менее приемлемого попадания в произношение и ритмику диктора – готовься к режиму: одно упражнение за одно занятие, не более.
Кстати, вот именно по этой причине совершенно не понимаю, как некоторые умудряются проходить подобный курс за несколько недель. Вдумчиво занимаясь даже каждый день, подойти к концу книги раньше, чем через несколько месяцев, никак не получится! Почему-то кажется мне, что в вопросе постановки произношения, постепенный «Импрув» (Improve) лучше взятия учебника «нахрапом» с неизбежным забыванием всего выученного в ближайшем будущем.

Хотя, может я и не права, т.к. контрольные тесты, приведенные в конце книги, снова выявили знакомые проблемы:
1) С распознаванием на слух.
Странным образом тормозила на парах: Cheap/chip, Feel/fill, Pool/pull, Fool/full, Sun/sung, Ice/eyes. Особенно, если они быстро проговаривались. Отличить могу (причем, без ошибок!), но приходится сильно напрягаться.
2) С произношением.
Through и thousand – моя вечная головная боль! Иногда к ним примешиваются three/father, train/try, и тогда становится совсем печально.

Короче, есть над чем работать. Давно уже ждет своей очереди замечательная книга Ship or Sheep? – An Intermediate Pronunciation Course (автор Ann Baker). Слышала про этот курс много хорошего. Думаю, пришла пора убедиться лично. :)

Проглотила 5-ю книгу за два дня, буквально проглотила. Очень легко читается! Сюжет улетный, не оторваться.
Незнакомых слов встретилось мало. То ли я всех их отловила уже в предыдущих книгах, то ли в состоянии крайней увлеченности смысл выявляется сам собой, на подсознательном уровне.
Как же я люблю это состояние свободного полета по тексту, когда авторское слово вливается в тебя плавно, без задержек на ненужный перевод и сомнения в его правильности!

All there = (разг.) с головой в порядке, в своем уме (Is he all there or what?);
cut to the chase = (разг.) переходить к главному, к сути дела (She had to cut to the chase.);
flip smth. over = перевернуть;
nuke = (AmSlang) to cook something in a microwave (I was going to nuke some popcorn…);
roger = (воен.) «вас понял» – при радиообмене между военными (Roger that!);
technicolor yawn = this is the colourful Australian phrase for vomiting (… do the Technicolor yawn);
truth or dare = правда или желание (игра такая ;)).

An interesting book is a great teacher!

I love foreign languages and I love young adult books! Roswell High book series, as well as Harry Potter series, are helping me with my English more than anything else I have tried. They constantly give me everyday expressions, British and American slang/sayings, etc.
Unfortunately, the books could not improve my speaking skills… (sigh).
Anyway. I’ve read the fourth book in the Roswell High series (The Watcher) by Melinda Metz and here are some interesting words and expressions that I’ve found:

after-hours = после рабочего дня, после отбоя (You’re predictable in your after-hours activities);
bummer = «облом» (What a bummer!);
check out = (разг.) умереть (You can’t check out now!);
crash = crash out (break out) = быстро засыпать, «отрубиться»;
сrew cut = crew haircut = короткая стрижка, «ежик»;
flag down = сигнализировать, давать отмашку;
joint = (ам. жарг.) косяк (He’d been busted for smoking a joint behind the school);
mug = (разг.) лицо или рот;
no dice = бесполезно, ничего не вышло, этот номер не пройдет (It’s no dice, buddy);
on it = принято;
rocks = (разг.) лед (…on the rocks – …со льдом);
settle for = довольствоваться чем-либо;
sitch = situation (AmSlang);
stakeout spot = место, откуда ведется наблюдение, засада;
to cut smb. some slack = (амер.) быть менее строгим к кому-либо, дать поблажку.

I’ve become a huge Roswell High fan

I’ve just read The seeker (the third book in the Roswell High series by Melinda Metz) and I think this book is one of the best in the series. I love the romance part of the story, it is so cute. A-and… yes, I’m Michael-Maria crazy!

English-Russian mini-dictionary RH3:
A sleep over = вечеринка с ночевкой в гостях;
bib = детский нагрудник, слюнявчик (you should wear a bib… гы-гы);
cheese it = замолчи, перестань;
extra = (здесь) статист (be an extra in the movie of high school);
lay low = лечь на дно;
lite = (ам. прост.) light (the «lite» version of smth.);
sex fiend = сексуальный маньяк;
the odds = шансы, вероятность, (the short odds = почти равные шансы).

My English level (part 2)

Today I got my second English test results back:
– Spoken B1
– Listening B2
– Reading B2
– Written (no tests)
Summary B2

Yes, I agree, my English level is more likely to be B2 than C1.
I had an hour long conversation with English native speaker and I enjoyed every minute of it. The examiner said that my accent don’t sounds Russian. It sounds West European! Wow! English Pronunciation In Use is a very useful book, by the way.

Результат второго теста – В2… Ну вот, теперь это больше похоже на правду! То, что не звучу для нейтива как большинство русскоговорящих – удивляет и не может не радовать. English Pronunciation In Use – полезная вещь, оказывается.

Общалась с экзаменатором в общей сложности около часа. Поняла почти все из того, что она говорила, за исключением лишь видовых названий некоторых растений и животных. И, кажется, меня разговорили немного. :)

My English level

Если верить нейтив-спикеру (USA), протестировавшей меня накануне, мой уровень английского… C1.
Расклад такой:
– Spoken C2
– Listening B2
– Reading B2
– Written (не тестирован)
Summary C1

Ну, что сказать? За “Reading” обидно, думала до C1 дотяну. С результатами за “Listening” в принципе согласна, а вот “Speaking” мой она явно перехвалила. Разговорный уровень у меня едва ли до B1 добегает, и это при условии, если мне есть что по теме сказать. Жаль, “Writing” не тестировался.

День английского языка

Как-то так само собой получилось, что практически целый день говорила и думала только на “инглише”. М-м-м, супер!

* Прошла тест на http://testyourvocab.com/
Final result: Your total vocabulary size is estimated to be: 9770 words.
Разочарована немного т.к. полтора года назад этот же самый тест мне final result в 9030 слов выдавал (https://silentpolyglot.com/много-или-мало/). Остается надеяться, что на определенном этапе не количество слов становится важным, а качество т.е. правильное употребление слов и словосочетаний в соответствии с их значениями.

* Почти час рассказывала девочке из Орегона об отечественном рысистом коневодстве вообще, и о перспективах применения методов ДНК диагностики лошадей быстроаллюрных пород в частности. Как много девочка поняла из моего путанного рассказа – не ведаю, но вот я теперь точно знаю, что означает выражение «встать с мокрой спиной» применительно и к изучению иностранных языков тоже!
Отметила еще одну интересную деталь. Когда помощи-подсказки забытого слова ждать не у кого, организм как-то сам мобилизуется и спонтанно на хорошей скорости начинает выдавать аналоги из казалось бы уже недоступного “пассива”. При этом, экспириенс и уверенность в себе подскакивают моментально. В общем, мне понравилось.

* Откопала интересную книгу 31 Dream Street by Lisa Jewell. Тяжеловато пошла, посмотрим, что будет дальше. Мне всегда сложно сразу “войти” в ход мыслей, стиль, словарный запас британцев и ирландцев; с американцами как-то все гораздо легче складывается.

I’m so disappointed

I had never read Danielle Steel book before so I decided to give it a try. I’ve read two of her books recently “Big Girl” and “Dating Game” and I was hugely disappointed. I don’t know if she always writes like this but I will never read anything by this author again!
Her writing was boring and so repetitive. From book to book she said almost the same things over and over again. No depth, the characters are flat! I had to force myself to finish just because I finish almost every book I start.

But… maybe I’ve missed something? Danielle Steel is a bestselling author. Maybe her other books might be worth reading?

The American Standardbred by Professor Ron Groves (in English)

I’ve just finished reading the free electronic book called “The American Standardbred” and written by Professor Ron Groves. A very well-written book, I might add!
It was just what I needed: a complete review of American Standardbreds. I enjoed reading it especially about the history of horse racing in America.
America and Russia… For centuries we’ve had two very different selection programs because the purposes of breeding the Orlov trotter and the American Standardbred were different. In the book I ran across this quotation also: «… unlike the Americans, the European founders established neither guidelines for creating a distinct breed nor standards for their inclusion into stud books»…
Yes, it’s all true! That’s why the Orlov trotter could never approach the American Standardbred in speed. But I don’t think it needs to because in selection only by speed we can lose the Orlov itself as an elegant, and at the same time strong, powerful looking carriage horse.
I love Orlov trotters! There’s something magical about them. I’ve been in love with this horse breed for over 20 years and I can’t stand the thought of losing it. After the fall of the Soviet Union, the future of the Orlov Trotter is still unclear. I hope my research project will help (a little bit) to keep this beautiful breed from dying out.

P.S. I wonder how many mistakes in English I`ve made…
