“Чудесный доктор” – А.И. Куприн

Давно я не плакала над книгой, очень давно. И вот вчера, пока слушала «Чудесный доктор» Куприна в исполнении Владимира Стукалова, не могла остановить слез.
Эта история, она здесь, с нами, никуда не уходила. Первая ее часть так уж точно.

Внешний лоск и пустота в душе. Слащавая любовь напоказ ко всем и высокоточная ненависть к каждому в отдельности. Неискоренимый синдром вахтера и вновь приобретенное умение с наслаждением бить лежачего.

Одно отличие – не хватает Пироговых. Те, кто остались, стараются лишний раз не выходить, не дышать громко…

The Slums of Saint Petersburg by Vsevolod Krestovsky

Just finished reading The Slums of Saint Petersburg by Vsevolod Krestovsky in Russian.
(“Петербургские трущобы” by Всеволод Владимирович Крестовский).

At first, I decided to listen to the audio version of this book, but no, no, no! I realized almost immediately that this true masterpiece of Russian literature should be read with my eyes first.

It took me exactly two months to finish the book (March 23-June 23, 2022). The book was huge (more than 1,000 pages long), and also I needed to stop quite often to give myself time to reflect on what I have read.
But I’m not complaining! I loved this book!

This book is more than just a story. This is a book about life itself. The life of the city of Petersburg, and its inhabitants – fabulously rich and extremely poor.
What shocked me most about this book was the death of young woman named Masha. I sobbed when I read this… But no more words! I don’t want to spoil the book for anyone.
If you are interested in learning more about Russian culture and history, I highly recommend reading the book. This one is really good!

Рыжие, гнедые, серые, вороные… – Александр Иванович Куприн

К стыду своему, только сейчас прочитала очерк Александра Куприна “Рыжие, гнедые, серые, вороные…” Причем, попался он мне совершенно случайно, когда искала в интернете совершенно постороннюю инфу.
И сразу захватил. Замечательный написано! Тонко, душевно, плавно.
Ни грамма лишнего! Каждое слово, каждая строчка на своем месте.

Всем любителям лошадей любого возраста – рекомендую!

Обломов – Иван Гончаров

Дочитала «Обломова». Атмосферная вещь! Чуть затянута на мой дилетантский взгляд, но совсем чуть-чуть. (Кстати, возможно именно эта подзатянутость дает еще больше ощутить дух времени).

Книгу до этого никогда не читала. Даже толком не знала, о чем конкретно роман. И уж тем более не понимала, зачем в нем так много страниц. Казалось бы, ну что там описывать? Повесть о лени на более чем 600-ста страницах? Вы серьезно?
Однако, уже с первых страниц была искренне удивлена. Как и в случае с «Анной Карениной» Л. Толстого – ожидание и реальность не совпали. В лучшую сторону!
Теперь на очереди две другие книги Ивана Гончарова – “Обыкновенная история” и “Обрыв”. Очень хочется найти их в бумажном варианте.

How to Write a Damn Good Novel by James N. Frey

I’ve read only two books on writing so far. The first one was On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft by Stephen King, which I read a year ago. Just now I finished reading the second one and I absolutely loved it!

The book called How to Write a Damn Good Novel: A Step-by-Step No Nonsense Guide to Dramatic Storytelling by James N. Frey.

I think, it’s an excellent read, especially for those who want to write novels. The book is very well written and it contains many clear explanations, various examples and interesting techniques that might be helpful for beginner writers.

P.S. I managed to find this book only in the Russian translation (Как написать гениальный роман – Джеймс Н. Фрэй), and I want to say that the translation was really good. Nevertheless, I would like to read (re-read 😊 ) this book again someday in it’s original language (English).
