Tree or Three?: An Elementary Pronunciation Course by Ann Baker

Осилила половину учебника “Tree or Three?”. Начитала немного вслух из первой главы ГП 1 (Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone), которая у меня используется как тестовая для записи своих аудио на английском, в попытке улучшить произношение.
Если честно, пока никаких изменений в произношении и скорости чтения не отмечаю. Скорее даже наоборот, запись полугодовой давности мне нравится гораздо больше… Ну, может только чуть-чуть я в скорости прибавила.
Еще одну вещь заметила: как только мой мозг оказывается перед необходимостью выдать что-то спонтанное “от себя” вслух, в тот же момент правильное произношение, натренированное на коротких учебных фразах, мгновенно исчезает. Так что пока все, что могу – это ме-е-едленные разговоры на страшенном рунглише, да еще и с полной потерей грамматики.

Jane Eyre (2011 film) – review in English

I’ve been a Jane Eyre fan since I was 11 or 12 years old and I have every Jane Eyre movie version available. Of course, I had been so excited about a new version coming out last week… but in the cinema I was shocked. It’s one of the worst adaptations of the book I have ever seen. It was so boring.
This film version shows no emotion, no passion, no chemistry between Jane and Rochester. In fact, Mia Wasikowska plays as if she was half asleep; she is lifeless and has no interest in the role that she is playing. Michael Fassbender was OK… simply OK, but nothing special. Only Judy Dench as Mrs. Fairfax was wonderful, her performance is the only thing worth watching!
In my opinion, Cary Fukunaga (director) and the main actors do not understand the novel. Jane Eyre was an intelligent girl full of energy, passion and life!
By the way, where are Miss Temple, Rosamond Oliver and the gypsy scene? Where are the famous lines “Reader, I married him…?” It’s a very sketchy version of the story. I was really disappointed and I did not like it at all.
The 2006 version of Jane Eyre (with Ruth Wilson and Toby Stevens) is a hundred times better!

I did it!

I’ve just finished reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J. K. Rowling. I did it at last! I’ve read all seven Harry Potter books in English!
It wasn’t an easy read for me, because there were many slang words and a lot of English idioms there.
At the very beginning I wasn’t a Harry Potter fan at all. In fact, I was just learning English language by reading. But the more I read, the more I like it, and now I consider myself to be the ultimate Harry Potter and Snape fan.
I think, I admire Snape more than Harry Potter. Snape is a complicated man but it made him very real and full of life. And I believe Snape isn’t dead! He is a very powerful wizard and I don’t see a reason why snake’s venom could kill the school’s Potions and Defence Against the Dark Arts Master! So, I hope we’ll see a continuation of the story line soon. I’m nearly 100% sure about that. :)

Tree or Three? by Ann Baker

На выходных удалось выкроить немного времени и пройти несколько юнитов из “Tree or Three? An Elementary Pronunciation Course” (автор Ann Baker). Удивительно, как сильно выматывают подобные занятия! От неуклюжих попыток копирования правильного произношения жутко болит челюсть и язык с трудом ворочается во рту. Страшная болтушка, я и не знала раньше, что говорить – это ТАК трудно! :)
Интересно, подобные занятия хоть к чему-то полезному приведут? На сегодняшний день не могу правильно произносить даже такие простейшие слова, как: three, brother, river… Ну, посмотрим, что будет через месяц. Обожаю эксперименты!

Teасh Yourself English Vocаbulary by Martin Hunt

Прошла “Teасh Yourself English Voсаbulary“. Самоучитель простенький, но очень полезный. И основная его полезность заключается в том, что к нему прилагается довольно приличное количество аудиоматериалов. Может это и покажется странным, но я книгу изучала в основном для понимания и анализа ошибок в произношении, а не для пополнения словарного запаса. Хотя, несколько новых слов все же встретилось:
– leap year – високосный год;
– beetroot – свекла;
– lingerie – женское белье. (Lingerie – is clothes that women wear under their clothes: knickers, bra, etc.).

Следующим номером нашей программы идет “Tree or Three?” by Ann Baker. Буду в рязанской глубинке самостоятельно пытаться правильное английское произношение осваивать. :)

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – читается, но медленно

Одолела половину 7 ГП (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) на английском.
Читается последняя книга тяжело: много разговорных выражений, много «волшебной» лексики, вообще много всего, с чем в предыдущих шести книгах сталкиваться не приходилось. Экспириенс автора явно вырос: появились предложения длиною в абзац, и так лихо закрученные, что смысл их постигается далеко не сразу.
С огромным трудом продралась через главу с выдержками из книги Риты Скитер (Rita Skeeter). Невероятно, но стиль здесь совершенно иной, как будто написано это было не Роулинг, а посторонним (но не менее талантливым!) человеком. Вообще, с самого начала погружения в книгу время от времени складывалось такое ощущение, что работал над ней не один писатель, двое, как минимум.

Удивительно, совершенно удивительно! Действительно, восхищаюсь талантом! Ну, а меня ждет последний рывок: вторая половина книги. Кто бы мог подумать, что эта эпопея когда-нибудь завершится?!.
Очень хотелось бы дочитать книгу прямо сейчас, только вот жопа в том, что на следующей неделе мне снова нужно уезжать работать… недель на несколько… Так что чтение откладывается на неопределенный срок. Все, как всегда. Грустно, блин. Почему мы не всегда можем делать то, что хотим?

Ковбои против Пришельцев (Cowboys & Aliens)

Посмотрела вчера «Ковбои против Пришельцев». Очень неплохое кино. Не ожидала, что понравится; надо будет обязательно еще раз пересмотреть чуть погодя.
Дэниел Крэйг – совершенно никакой Джеймс Бонд из «Казино «Рояль»» – здесь, напротив, сыграл просто блестяще! Очень убедительно у него вышел нормальный американский мужик, не слишком породистый, но с невероятным пронизывающим взглядом огромных голубых глаз, вселяющим уверенность и способным повести за собой и ковбоев, и индейцев.
Харрисон Форд тоже понравился. Особенно тем, что не пытался он на сей раз лезть из кожи вон и играть кого-то, уже совсем не подходящего ему по возрасту и внешнему виду. Наделив своего героя всеми узнаваемой ухмылкой легендарного Индианы Джонса, Форд оказался идеальным полковником Долархайдом. Думаю, что лучше него никто не смог бы так раскрыть непростой и многогранный характер этого персонажа.

Теперь осталось дождаться «Джен Эйр 2011», что стартует в наших кинотеатрах с 1 сентября, и все пункты в списке киножеланий на этот год будут закрыты. Правда, тут есть один нюанс, и опять связанный с изучением английского, как ни странно. Давняя поклонница творчества Бронте, я точно знаю, что не смогу слушать тот перевод, который предложат русскоговорящему зрителю в кинотеатрах, и поэтому впервые пойду смотреть кино на языке оригинала. Скорее всего, в «5 Звезд» на Новокузнецкой. Интересно, среди кого я окажусь: среди скучающих экспатов, изучающих язык студентов или среди фанатов романа? :)

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (in English)

I’ve just read the first third of the seventh and final book in the Harry Potter series (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows). It’s a book that leaves long-lasting impression and helps me to study English (as previous six books have done pretty well too). But all the same, it’s the last book in this whole story and I can’t wait to read it to the very end.
I wrote down some words and phrases which I’ve found useful.
Here they are:

Cop hold! – Постой! Подожди! Остановись!

decoy – подсадная утка, ложная цель;

proper pride – чувство собственного достоинства;

skirting board (брит.) – плинтус;

(the) essentials – предметы первой необходимости;

the other way round – совсем наоборот, как раз наоборот.

The Scarlet Pimpernel (TV series 1999–2000)

I’ve just finished watching the BBC’s Scarlet Pimpernel series, all six of them: “The Scarlet Pimpernel”, “Valentin Gautier”, “The King’s Ransom”, “Ennui”, “Friends and Enemies”, “A Good Name”.

I love the actors playing Percy, Chauvlin, Robespierre and Marguerite! I absolutely love them!
# Richard E. Grant is a great actor! He has the best smile I have ever seen – radiant and heartwarming.
# Elizabeth McGovern is a very good actress too. The great thing is that Elizabeth McGovern and Richard Grant have more chemistry than the pair of Jane Seymour and Anthony Andrews, who played in the other version of the Scarlet Pimpernel (1982).
# Robespierre was played by Ronan Vibert and I have to admit I knew nothing about this actor before but I enjoyed watching how he played, especially when he was fighting for his daughter.
# Martin Shaw as Paul Chauvelin …. OMG, I love this Chauvelin!
He’s wonderful, isn’t he?
